About the Conference

Annual Human Rights Conference in Memory of Yuri Markovich Schmidt

The annual conference in memory of lawyer and dissident Yuri Markovich Schmidt, dedicated to the defense of human rights in Russia, is held in Berlin with the participation of leading Russian human rights defenders, lawyers, and civil society activists, as well as international political and public figures.

Yuri M. Schmidt

— Lawyer, Chairman of the Russian Committee of Lawyers in Defense of Human Rights.

Born on May 10, 1937, in Leningrad. He graduated from the Faculty of Law of Leningrad State University in 1960 and joined the Leningrad City Bar Association. He handled criminal cases involving murder and economic crimes. Since the early 1960s, he was associated with dissident circles, contributing to samizdat journals and collections. He was repeatedly summoned for questioning, and his home was searched.

Since the late 1980s, he participated in numerous criminal trials, defending individuals accused for political reasons.

In 1991, he founded the Russian Committee of Lawyers in Defense of Human Rights.

He served as a defense lawyer in high-profile cases, including the Yukos case, the case of Captain Alexander Nikitin, and the murder of State Duma deputy Sergey Yushenkov, among others. He frequently succeeded in having his clients acquitted. He consistently spoke out in defense of politically persecuted individuals in Russia and abroad.

He was a laureate of numerous Russian and international awards, including:

  • “Lawyer of the Year” (Moscow Lawyers’ Club, 1996)
  • Russia’s top legal award “Femida” (1997)
  • Rainer Hildebrandt International Human Rights Award (2010)
  • Special diploma from Human Rights Watch (1993)
  • Fyodor Plevako Gold Medal and the “Honored Lawyer” badge (1999)
  • International League for Human Rights Award (1999)
  • Recognition Award from the International Helsinki Federation (2000)

History

The first conference took place in Berlin in 2017 at the initiative of Mikhail Khodorkovsky. Later, the organizing partners became “Postcard Human Rights Defense” and the Center for Liberal Modernity (LibMod).

The second Yuri Schmidt Memorial Conference. May 18–19, 2018, Berlin

Program – Roundtables:

  • How to respond to the shrinking space for civil society in Russia
  • Human rights and anti-corruption activism in the digital age: threats and opportunities. How social media helps fight corruption
  • Russia and the Council of Europe: how to maintain civilized relations with international institutions
  • Russian refugees and the right to asylum: distinguishing between political persecution and other categories of asylum seekers. How the West can recognize political persecution from regular criminal cases

2019

The third Yuri Schmidt Memorial Conference. September 26–27, 2019, Berlin

Program – Roundtables:

  • Working in a repressive environment: Russian NGOs and their foreign partners under the law on “foreign agents” and “undesirable organizations”
  • Open panel discussion: “Politically motivated persecution and repression in modern Russia”
  • Shrinking space: how can Russian human rights defenders work under new repressive practices?
  • Conditions in Russian prisons: lawlessness, torture, and inhumane treatment. How to improve the situation of detainees?
  • How can the EU and Germany support human rights initiatives in Russia?
  • Russia and the Council of Europe: what’s next?

The conference was not held in 2020–2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Since 2022, due to new repressive laws and practices, we do not publish photos or names of participants publicly.
